I’ve made this cake twice and it is perfection! Once with blueberries instead of strawberries, once with strawberries. It is the perfect size for a small family or group. I hate frosting, so that’s a bonus. I serve with a little whipped cream on the side.
Great recipe! Quick to mix up. Batter is thick but it turned out wonderful. Lemon zest adds a nice pop. My boyfriend said he could eat the whole thing!
I made this yesterday and it turned out perfect, served it with homemade strawberry ice cream which went better with it than I imagined it would. I do think you need to be sure to read the directions properly (and make sure the butter and eggs are room temperature. I.e. let them sit out in the kitchen for at least 30 minutes prior to using) But I don’t see how this wouldn’t turn out just as perfect unless you fail to read directions or follow the recipe properly.
Followed the exact recipe. May have added some extra fruit , but it turned out awesome. Gone in one afternoon and I couldn't be happier.
I had berries that needed to be used and this recipe was perfect! It is a denser crumb cake, but absolutely stunning and delicious. I used some of the berries to do a simple berry syrup to accompany the cake. It did take a lot longer to bake.
Followed the instructions exactly. As I was putting it in the tin, I sensed something was wrong. It just did not feel right. It is the worst cake I have ever made. Very dry, tough, flat. Not edible. It's in the trash. I compared the recipe to 3 other yellow cake recipes and found that the proportions of each ingredient were about right, but all other recipes had baking powder/baking soda and milk/buttermilk added. That explains it. No raising agent and no moisture. However, this recipe did have one thing that my other recipes did not, and that was lemon zest. It was a nice addition.

I made this using the exact proportions, but used blueberries since they were on hand. I cooked it for 33 mins to get the clean toothpick. It came out looking like a blueberry pancake, but once out, powdered and sliced, had a crumb and density just like the photo. Great, addictive taste. Thank you!
