Orzo and Chickpeas with Turmeric-Ginger Broth
Coconut milk and fresh lime juice are natural flavor partners to ginger and turmeric; here they come together to form a restorative tea-based broth that’s delicious studded with chickpeas and pasta.

I LOVE this soup!! So tasty, lots of flavor and relatively easy to make!
The flavor profile of this recipe could be interesting, but using tea bags is the flaw. I actually had Rishi Turmeric Ginger loose leaf tea on hand that I used. I added a little more based on the bland reviews. I didn’t realize at the time the third ingredient in the tea is licorice, which really doesn’t mix with fish sauce. I had to add more coconut milk, citrus, chicken broth and salt to try to counter the overly sweet broth. After working to adjust it - my family did eat it and like it. Maybe Rishi tea bags don’t include licorice? Or it was like this recipe wasn’t fully tested.
Pantry Staples??? In what country? I like the recipe, but definitely NOT pantry staples....
Like Barbara said - under whelmed. Saw this and the flavor profiles sounded amazing and delicious. Followed the recipe exactly - as I always do when trying a new recipe - so disappointed. Tweaked it - slightly improved it - still not delicious, not a keeper, and would not make again. Overall...smhh Hate when I try a new recipe that disappoints.
I was happy to see this recipe because I had all of the ingredients and it sounded perfect. But I was completely underwhelmed. The broth is very watery and the chickpeas orzo combo aren't enough. The teabags just added a watery flavor. Would not make again.
I knew my wife and I would like this recipe but I had no idea how much. I usually make a recipe as written but I had some other ingredients on hand and was making it for dinner. In place of the pasta I used Farro and I added some leftover plain rotisserie chicken. Everything else I did as written. For the garnish I used cilantro and the Asian chili garlic sauce. This is a total keeper recipe. It was so satisfying on a cold winter night.
I have ginger tea bags. Could I add some powdered turmeric, and how much? This sounds like a good lunch. I would like to try it.
I don’t have the tea bags but I do have fresh ginger and turmeric as well as powdered. Which do you think would lend better flavor if I steeped them?
这是很容易让所以美味!和the leftovers are even better!
This was really easy and delicious! I thought the broth was a little thin so I may reduce the 3 cups of water to 2.5 next time I make it. Super warming and comforting. Can't wait for my leftovers tomorrow!
Love this recipe, particularly the genius idea of using herbal tea bags as the starter for the broth. I used Pukka tea bags (Turmeric Active), which provided a great foundation. I mostly followed the recipe...it’s a great template, made small changes! Used black bean noodles in place of orzo as I had some leftover. I also added ~1.5 cups raw spinach which wilted down perfectly in the soup and packed more nutrients. This was everything the description claimed...comforting, tasty, simple, filling and light. Excellent lunch option during the week. I’ll make the broth ahead and stack the other ingredients in containers. Mix and microwave at work. Thank you for this 4-star, simple and cost effective lunch!
